Hello, hello! Welcome to my newly re-named blog (formerly Secret Ingredient: Love). I was never completely crazy about that old name, and, as hubby told me, it always suggested a cooking blog, rather than one primarily about sewing with a bit of baking thrown in. When I started thinking about how much I'd like to get back to blogging, partially for a bit of encouragement to get my sewing machine out more often, I decided I'd change things up a bit. 'Dilettante' seemed a really apt word to apply to myself as both a sewer and a blogger, as I'm an amateur and fairly casual about both hobbies, so here we are... The Sewing Dilettante! Bear with me as I transition fully into this new blog; I'll be keeping the old email address for the time being but am linking to a new, blog-specific Instagram account: thesewingdilettante.

Since my youngest little'un was born in November 2015, I've been doing the odd bit of patchwork and embroidery, but it feels as if I'm only really getting the chance to get back into some more regular sewing now, nearly 18 months on! This week, I'm determined to gain a little control over my scrap box and have been sizzix-ing my way through the largest of the pieces, turning them into 2.5" squares or 1" hexies. I've got a sizable pile of each now, and the jumble of colours and patterns - not to mention my tidier scrap box - is making me smile.



While I could productively spend several more evenings doing this, the 2.5" squares got me thinking about a scrap-busting log cabin project, along the lines of this baby quilt I made a couple of years ago (probably my favourite make ever). Instead of traditional log cabin blocks, though, I'm going for wonky quarter log cabins, using red or pink foundation squares and a mix of brightly-coloured scraps.





I've got six 12.5" blocks finished and reckon I'll need 20 for a decent-sized cot quilt.



It's intended for a gorgeous baby girl born earlier this year, but I'm going for a riot of rainbow colours, not just the traditional pinks, creams, and pastels.


I can't wait to make some more!

    Love the new look blog! And as scrap loving girl, your log cabin blocks are gorgeous too! It's going to be one colourful quilt!

Not quite what you had in mind?! Read on...  Thursdays are prime-time thinking-ahead days for me. Already thoroughly sick of the workweek by about Tuesday, I yearn for Thursdays as a kind of sign that I can now legitimately begin planning my weekend festivities. In that vein, here’s a suggestion for this coming Saturday: the Quilting Exhibition & Open Day at Christian Fellowship Church (CFC) , Belmont Road, Belfast. The brainchild of Judith of Just Jude , the Quilting Exhibition & Open Day is designed to showcase some of the wonderful work the students in Judith’s Rags to Bags sewing classes , which also take place in CFC, have been producing. It’s on from 10am to 3 pm, and entry is free, with complimentary tea and coffee on offer (always a bonus, especially if the weather is anything like it is today!) Almost there...

I can hardly believe it's already December! You know what that means, right?! Only a matter of weeks/days before Baby H arrives! CRAZY! Yesterday, my lovely friend, Kristin, threw me a fantastic baby shower, and we're now materially, if not mentally, prepared for the baby's arrival. Exciting times!  Thanks to a fairly un-ambitious sewing to-do list last month, I have a couple of things finished and ready (or nearly ready) to add to the pile of beautiful baby clothes, blankets, and accessories given to us by our super generous friends and family. That includes Frankenblanket... And two little throw pillows for the nursery... Truth be told, I'm not sure how crazy I am about these pillows. They certainly don't seem to go together... the first is too busy for the second, which definitely seems to require some buttons or applique or something. But then, the rocking chair is really too small for both pillows together, so maybe it's no bad thing that

Almost there!

Well, after devoting much of my weekend to it, my Double Irish Chains quilt is all but finished. Phew! All I have to do, as you can see from the pic below, is hand sew the binding - the perfect project for those lazy days of my New Hampshire holiday next week. A rare spot of sunshine demanded that I take this photo in the front 'garden'. There were a few miscalculations along the way, as well as a couple of unfortunate fabric mis-cuts due to sheer exhaustion, but eventually, I got there. I briefly contemplated free machine quilting when I'd gotten the quilt sandwich put together, but I quickly ruled that out in respect for my sanity. Instead, I followed the chains themselves, quilting diagonal lines in an unobtrusive cream thread. The effect, I think, is perfect, as the diagonals emphasise and draw attention to the chains while still giving the eye a little something to work with in the large cream-coloured patches of fabric.
