An afternoon of hexies

After a particularly hectic couple of weeks of work, I decided I deserved a little decompression time last week. So, I took a whole afternoon off, plonked myself on the couch and spent a blissful few hours watching daytime tv and working on some long neglected English paper piecing. Several months ago a friend had introduced me to the humble hexagon, and I was hooked, especially as they're so easy to make and so portable. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pfaff, but sometimes I like not having to faff around - excuse the pun - getting it down from the spare room and setting it up to sew. Sometimes I want something I can just whip out of my sewing bag at a moment's notice and work away at to my heart's content with nothing more than a needle, thread, and paper hexagons. Obviously, the urge comes and goes.... in my initial English paper piecing frenzy, I made up ten hexagon 'flowers' with the intention of (eventually) turning them into a quilt for an as-then-unknown baby.

My stack of completed hexagon flowers.
And all spread out...

As seems to happen with me so often, however, the hexies got set aside for other projects, until I re-discovered them in my fabric stash the other day when looking for something entirely different. Now that there's a particular Christmas baby needing a quilt, I thought it'd be the perfect project to go back to, in part, of course, because I can bring it pretty much anywhere with me, including on my trip home to New Hampshire in a couple of weeks.

While sat in front of the tv the other day, I managed to complete another five hexagon flowers, bringing my total up to fifteen. I laid them all out together and reckon that fifteen is perfect for a cot-sized quilt once interspersed with rows of white hexies in between. I've gathered up all my bits of scrap white/off-white material and will be furiously making hexies all summer!

  1. Lovely hexies Tina! I adore making hexies (have been at one particula quilt of hexies on and off for 2 years!) and find them very therapeutic.
